If you are traveling on the arduous road between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, it is a pleasant place to break the journey for a night and is a good base from which to explore the pre-angkorian Chenla capital of Sambor Prey Kuk and the hill-top temple of Phnom Santuk. It is another sleepy provincial capital, but the proximity of Sambor Prey Kuk makes it a more rewarding stop than many of the others.
Sambor Prey Kuk all most the big tree

Sambor Prey Kuk: is home to the most impressive group of pre-Angkorian monuments anywhere in Cambodia and there are more than 100 small temples scattered through the forest. They are some of the oldest structures in the country.

The complex of Ishanapura consists of four groups of edifices, most of which are made of brick, whose design prefigures a numbers of later developments in Khmer art. The most northern groups is dedicated Gambhireshvara, one of Shiva's many forms, while the other groups are all dedicated to Shiva himself.

It is best visited on the way to Siem Reap as it gives the visitor a chronological insight into the development of temple architecture in Cambodia. Coming from Siem Reap you might have seen enough temples to last a lifetime and those at Sambor Prey Kuk are certainly not in the same league as Angkor.

Getting there and away, the road between Kampong Thom and Sambor Prey Kuk are in pretty poor sharp so the 35 km takes about 50 minutes. There are two routes, neither of is straightforward, so it is best to take a guide from Kampong Thom even if you got your own transport. Arrange a motor-driver for a day and expect to pay US$ 6 up and the cheapest way to get there is remarque-motor, but it will take nearly 3 hours.

Visitors come to Kampot for a taste of provincial Cambodia, the inexpensive, fresh from the ocean seafood, and to used is as a stepping stone to the Bokor station, Kep city and the rest of Southeastern Cambodia
